5 Tips for Strength Training to Slow Down the Aging Clock

Research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology shows that athletes age their cardiovascular and lung systems at half the rate of their sedentary peers. Another study published in the journal Circulation showed that men in their 50s who did six months of endurance training were able to reverse any age-related decline in aerobic capacity. "The human body needs to be active to keep all its physiological functions functioning properly," said Dr. Justin Mager, an exercise physiologist and internist in Mill Valley, California.

Muscle: Strength training

According to research results from the American College of Sports Medicine, people's muscle performance begins to deteriorate at a rate of 5% every decade starting around age 40, and this process accelerates after age 65 to 70. However, research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism shows that if you follow a steady regimen of aerobic exercise and strength training, the rate of muscle loss can be slowed or decreased. This conclusion still holds true even if it is started from later in life.

Joints: Maintain correct posture at all times

Dr. Thomas Stoller, an exercise physiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said: "If you run with your knees knocked out, ride a bicycle with your back misaligned, or often exercise with incorrect posture, you will suffer from body pain and arthritis, which will eventually accelerate the aging of your joints. Therefore, whether in life or exercise, you should always maintain the correct posture to maintain the long-term health of your joints."

Breasts: Wearing a bra correctly

The reason for sagging breasts is largely due to the deterioration of the function of the breast suspensory ligaments. Dr. Stoller said: "Proper support for the breasts, such as wearing a sports bra during exercise, can reduce the movement of the suspensory ligaments of the breasts, and the aging of the breasts will be slowed down."

Cell: Keep running

Researchers often use telomere length to assess the rate of biological aging. A study conducted by German scholars compared the telomere length of middle-aged long-distance runners with that of their sedentary peers. The results showed that the actual age of the athletes' cells was younger than that of those who did not like to exercise. This is why marathon runners usually have long lifespans.
