Parents always hope that their children will become successful. However, some children just never grow up, which makes their parents worried. A 5-year-old girl was very petite and often had high fever and bronchitis. She had caught a cold more than 12 times in one year. Her mother was worried that she was too underweight and had insufficient immunity, so she kept feeding her but there was no improvement. Children diagnosed by doctors as having serious allergic problems such as skin rashes, itching, chronic cough, poor sleep, nasal congestion, and runny nose are typical allergic children. After measuring the allergens, I found that I was allergic to dust mites, shrimps, and mold. It turned out that I was allergic to them! Dr. Chen Yongqi said that children's short growth may be related to allergic constitution and low immunity. Chen Yongqi, director of the pediatric weight management department of Rongxin Clinic, said that about 20% of children in the clinic face the problem of being underweight, of which 45% are caused by allergic diseases. Common allergic diseases in clinical practice include: rhinitis accounting for 25%, asthma accounting for 11%, gastroenteritis accounting for 5%, and atopic dermatitis accounting for 11%. These allergic diseases will affect children's intelligence and physical and mental development in the long run, causing inattention, memory loss, poor academic performance, loss of appetite, weight loss, etc. How to determine if a child is underweight? Chen Yongqi said that the BMI value can be calculated at home or the growth curve and weight-height index can be tracked at the outpatient clinic to determine whether the child is underweight. This includes when the growth curve is below 15%, the growth curve moves downward, the BMI is less than 15, and the weight-height index is less than 0.9, then you should pay attention to the possibility of being underweight. Treatment for allergic diseases can be divided into three aspects: environment, medication, and diet. In terms of environment, it is advisable to avoid being in an environment with allergens. Medication is divided into topical medications for skin symptoms and oral medications for allergic diseases, as well as sprays and inhalers for the nose and trachea. In terms of diet, you should avoid allergenic foods, supplement good bacteria, digestive enzymes, vitamin C, and essential fatty acids and amino acids. Dr. Chen Yongqi advises parents to ensure that their children have a balanced diet, get enough sleep, improve their home environment, stay away from allergens, and seek professional medical advice to control allergic symptoms and adjust their lifestyle so that they can grow up healthily. |
