3 complications caused by ovarian cysts

Ovarian cysts can affect the normal function of the ovaries and cause reproductive harm to women. If ovarian cysts are not treated promptly or thoroughly, they can also cause many complications.

1. Tumor pedicle torsion

Cystic teratomas, mucinous and serous cystadenomas are most susceptible to pedicle torsion, and the tumor is easily rotated by intestinal peristalsis or changes in body position. In acute pedicle torsion, the patient suddenly experiences severe pain in the lower abdomen, has difficulty in movement, and may even be awakened by pain during sleep at night. In severe cases, it may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and even shock. During examination, the abdominal wall muscles on the affected side are tense, tenderness is significant, and the mass has greater tension.

2. Cyst rupture

Cyst rupture refers to the rupture of a cyst or its squeezing. Spontaneous rupture is more common. Due to the rapid growth, the local blood supply of the cyst wall is insufficient, and the increased cystic fluid overflows from the weak part of the cyst wall into the abdominal cavity. After the cyst ruptures and enters the abdominal cavity, it may cause peritonitis, intestinal adhesions, and even intestinal obstruction.

3. Infection

Abdominal infection is not very common, mainly caused by pedicle torsion or cyst rupture, or from infection foci in adjacent organs, such as spread of appendix abscess, etc. Clinical manifestations include fever, abdominal pain, mass and abdominal tenderness, abdominal muscle tension and elevated white blood cell count, etc. Treatment should start with antibiotics, followed by surgical removal of the tumor.
