"Mayo Clinic Proceedings" recently published the latest publication from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The research team stated that people who engage in high-intensity exercise may have an increased risk of plaque accumulation in their heart vessels when they reach middle age. In the study, the authors analyzed 25 years of limb movement records of 3,175 subjects and assessed their coronary artery calcification (CAC). Coronary artery calcification is a clinical condition in which calcium deposits and plaques appear in the heart arteries. The presence and extent of coronary artery calcification in a patient is an important warning sign to doctors, indicating that the patient may be at increased risk for heart disease. Contrary to the authors' expectations, the experimental results showed that the group with the highest intensity of exercise (approximately three times the amount recommended by the national unit) had a 27% higher chance of developing coronary artery calcification in middle age (43-55 years old) than the group with the lowest intensity of exercise.
