Lin Shuwen, director of the Nutrition Department of Guangtian General Hospital, specially calculated the calories of 16 common barbecue ingredients after being brushed with barbecue sauce (please refer to the table below) and found that many ingredients are high in calories. Coupled with being marinated in soy sauce and brushed with barbecue sauce, it is very likely that one meal is equivalent to eating dozens of bowls of rice.

A meal of 4100 calories can be consumed by jogging for 6 hours

If you eat all 16 ingredients in the table, you will consume a total of 4,100 calories. For an adult weighing 60 kg, it would take 6 hours of jogging to burn off these calories. In addition, the meat used in barbecue is usually marinated with soy sauce. If barbecue sauce is added, it is easy to consume too much salt, leading to a burden on the kidneys or cardiovascular diseases.

Director Lin suggested that low-salt soy sauce can be chosen for pickles, or barbecue sauce can be diluted with water to reduce the saltiness. In addition, burnt substances are strong carcinogens, so it is best to discard the burnt parts and not eat them. When baking, tin foil can be used to wrap the ingredients, which can not only retain the freshness of the food, but also prevent the barbecue sauce from burning due to poor heat control.

Choose your ingredients wisely: eat more vegetables and you will be healthier

Director Lin pointed out that sausages are high-fat meats and bacon is oily, so they should be chosen less. Also, avoid grilling oily or skinny meats and offal because they are high in oil and cholesterol. Choose more lean meat because the oil from fat dripping onto charcoal will produce carcinogens that are harmful to the human body. In addition, you can add green peppers, green beans, shiitake mushrooms, wild rice shoots, loofah, enoki mushrooms and other vegetables as ingredients when grilling to achieve a balanced nutrition.
