Drinking vinegar to burn fat? Nutritionist: Vinegar contains high sugar content and makes you fatter

During the consecutive holidays, many people eat and drink a lot at every meal, and their diet is like drinking oil. Their waistlines have unknowingly become "swimming rings". In order to achieve the effect of weight loss, some people choose to drink vinegar to promote metabolism. However, nutritionists say that there is currently no relevant research that can clearly confirm the weight-loss effect of vinegar, and the sugar content of commercially available vinegar products is too high. Excessive intake may increase calorie intake and increase the risk of obesity.

Nutritionist Ji Yizhen reminds that commercially available fruit vinegar has a high sugar content, and people should dilute it with plenty of boiled water before drinking to avoid excessive intake and increase the risk of obesity.

Most people believe that sweet and sour vinegar drinks can eliminate greasiness, metabolize fat, and aid bowel movements, thereby achieving the goal of weight loss. According to Ji Yizhen, a nutritionist at Tong Hospital, the reasons why fruit vinegar drinks are believed to have a slimming effect include the high content of organic acids in vinegar, which can promote the body's metabolism and make people less likely to gain weight; vinegar, which is an alkaline food, tastes sour, which can help calcium absorption and thus accelerate metabolism; and the B vitamins and minerals in vinegar can help eliminate calories and remove fat from the body.

However, it is worth noting that there is currently no scientific research to clearly confirm the effectiveness of the above arguments. Therefore, the medical community and nutritionists are more reserved about the idea of drinking vinegar to lose weight, and believe that people's feeling of becoming lighter after drinking vinegar is purely a personal feeling! If you want to lose weight, you should eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, increase dietary fiber, reduce total calorie intake and exercise more.

As for some people's belief that the anti-obesity amino acids contained in vinegar can inhibit fat formation, nutritionist Ki Yizhen also said that he had never heard of such a statement. She further stated that it may be that people dilute it with a large amount of boiled water in order to avoid the pungent and sour taste. Drinking a large amount of it before meals can increase the sense of fullness, resulting in suppressed appetite and relatively less calorie intake.

Although you can drink more water before meals to suppress your appetite, you should not drink vinegar on an empty stomach to avoid over-stimulating the gastrointestinal mucosa and causing inflammation and ulcer reactions. If you want to drink vinegar water before meals to increase your sense of fullness, the original concentrate needs to be diluted with a large amount of boiled water so that the concentration does not exceed the product's recommended value, thereby reducing the damage of acetic acid to the stomach and intestines and the potential sugar crisis.

Nutritionist Ji Yizhen recommends that vinegar drinks can be consumed within 1 hour after a meal to help calcium absorption, but attention should still be paid to the drinking concentration. Most of the vinegar drinks available on the market are made from fruits. In addition to the sugar contained in the fruits themselves, the manufacturers also add a large amount of sugar to neutralize the acidity of the vinegar and make the vinegar drink more palatable. If it is not diluted enough, it may lead to excessive intake of sugar and calories, increase the chance of obesity, and may also increase blood lipid levels and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
