Introduction to non-surgical treatment of vulvar leukoplakia

Surgery is not usually recommended for the treatment of vulvar leukoplakia. The main reason is that surgical treatment often has a high recurrence rate, and the same is true for repeated surgical treatments. It is also easy to form scars, which affects the quality of sexual life. Therefore, here we mainly introduce non-surgical treatments for vulvar leukoplakia .

1. Hormone therapy

It mainly achieves the purpose of relieving itching and thinning the skin by anti-inflammatory, inhibiting connective tissue hyperplasia, and strengthening skin protein decomposition. Commonly used are glucocorticoid ointments or creams, such as betamethasone cream, triamcinolone ointment, hydrocortisone ointment, etc. Androgens or progestins can also be applied topically. Hormone treatment lasts for a long time, symptom control is poor, and relapses are easy after discontinuation of medication. It also requires frequent and repeated medication, and patient compliance is poor.

2. Traditional Chinese medicine treatment

Mainly use traditional Chinese medicine for external application and washing to clear away heat and toxic substances, dispel wind and dampness, and promote blood circulation and remove stasis. There are many reports on this treatment, but there is still a lack of objective evaluation indicators and long-term follow-up, and the reports on the treatment effect of vulvar leukoplakia are inconsistent.

3. Cryotherapy

Liquid nitrogen or liquid oxygen is used for local treatment to destroy the local diseased tissue. Blisters often occur in the lesion after treatment. This treatment has a good short-term effect, but the recurrence rate is relatively high, and the patient may also suffer from shock due to cold allergy. This is also a treatment for vulvar leukoplakia.

The non-surgical treatment methods for vulvar leukoplakia are mainly the above three. For patients, it is very necessary to choose the treatment method that suits them. Therefore, it is recommended that patients go to the hospital for a detailed examination first, diagnose the cause and other diseases, and then formulate a treatment plan for vulvar leukoplakia.
